What is High Barrier Bag?

High barrier bags can be custom built with protective layers and materials like film foil laminations, polyvinylidene chloride, and high density polyethylene. They are used for packaging a variety of products, including cannabis and edibles, coffee, tea, baby food, frozen foods, raw ingredients, pharmaceuticals, electronics, industrial chemicals, and agricultural products. Multiple layers of barrier film create the foundation of flexible pouches and bags, these layers are laminated together to form a remarkably strong and durable structure and material. High barrier bags are the product of the pressing need to have packaging guaranteed to protect and preserve products. In addition to having high puncture resistance and tensile strength, their oxygen and moisture vapor transmission rate is low.

Application of High Barrier Bag

Meat and Seafood
High barrier bags can prevent the penetration of water and oxygen, reduce bacterial growth, and thus extend the shelf life of meat. For seafood products, high barrier bags can also prevent contamination by odors and odors.

Dairy Products
High barrier bags can effectively prevent the entry of oxygen and water vapor, maintaining the taste and nutritional value of dairy products. Some special packaging structures, such as self standing bags, can provide better display effects and convenience.

Nuts and Dried Fruits
High barrier bags can prevent the entry of oxygen and water, delay oxidation reactions, and extend the shelf life of nuts and dried fruits. Some high barrier bags also have moisture and mold resistance, further protecting the product from contamination.

Beverages
High barrier bags can prevent the escape of oxygen and carbon dioxide, maintaining the freshness and taste of beverages. Some special coatings or lamination techniques can increase the gas barrier performance of high barrier bags.

Benefits of High Barrier Bag

High barrier bags or foil barrier bags provide plenty of advantages for businesses. We will look at some of these benefits of High barrier bags.

Extended product shelf life

Whether it is protection against grease, oxygen or humidity, moisture barrier packaging can prolong a product’s shelf life. For example, foods must remain fresh for as long as possible, and sealing out moisture or oxygen can keep them fresh longer.

Preventing spoilage

Preventing food from spoiling is something your business should take seriously, as it can make or break your business. Mold growth in food is dangerous. Foil barrier bags translate to safer products for your customers.

Cost savings

When you prevent spoilage or damage to your products, you reduce product waste. You can also avoid customer complaints and returns and the associated costs.

Film Types of High Barrier Bag

According to research conducted, there is a growing need for packaging materials that better preserve the contents within. This is due to concerns about the tendency of plastics to enable the exchange of gasses that might damage the quality and safety of packaged goods. Nowadays, high barrier packaging films are an essential part of product protection. It can extend the shelf life and maintain the quality of the product.

Oxygen Barrier Films
To enjoy an extended shelf life, some products should have packaging that possesses limited to zero oxygen transmission rates. Oxygen barrier packaging incorporates a specific material layer to keep oxygen out of the pouch, preserving your product's color, taste, or scent.

Moisture Barrier Films
If you need to protect your products against excessive vapor and moisture, our moisture barrier packaging materials will do the job. Protective layers and materials such as film foil laminations, polyvinylidene chloride, and high-density polyethylene can be custom designed into high-barrier packing pouches to prevent undesired moisture qualities from entering the pouch or bag.

Food Safe Barrier Films
Inconsistent or unexpectedly shortened shelf life is one of the most prevalent issues food consumables face. By producing a securely sealed barrier system, high-barrier packaging aids in the preservation of tastes and smells. The barrier coating effectively prevents oxygen and water vapor from coming into touch with delicate foods. Any air or moisture that enters the pouch can significantly impact products like coffee grounds, snacks, and certain dry ingredient food products.

Different Levels of Barrier Protection in Packaging

A barrier can consist of single layers, double layers or multilayers of coated films. Single-layer films are permeable to most gases, so added layers will improve the barrier strength. Our barriers fall into four categories, ranging from low to very high.
●Basic - single layer
●Basic - double layer
●Moderate
●High performing
Let's take a look at how these different barriers measure up.

Basic Barrier - Single Layer
Basic barriers with a single layer are food safe and perform well for general packaging. Here are the type of materials you would find in this barrier level:
●Polypropylene (PP): Including CPP, IPP, OPP, MOPP
●Polyethylene (PE): Including High-Density (HD) and Low-Density (LD)
●Polylactic Acid (PLA)
PE and PP materials both provide a moisture barrier. The PE bags are clear, soft, and flexible and provide good heat sealing capabilities. The PP bags provide high clarity, high gloss, and excellent tensile strength yet are not as breathable as the PE bags.
When blended with polymers such as cast unoriented polypropylene (CPP) and biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP), the PP bags have even better clarity and heat sealing performance.
PLA is a polylactic acid that is derived from plants and provides a medium oxygen barrier and a low moisture barrier.
Popular products and uses: Includes most of our plastic bags used for food, retail, transporting goods, and general packaging. Our Crystal Clear Bags made with BOPP offer an exceptional presentation for food products.

Basic Barrier - Double Layer
A basic barrier with two layers is often associated with laminated packaging. You may see this combination of materials in a double-layer barrier:
●PE/PP Lamination
●PET/PE Lamination
Materials like PP and PE are combined to create a stronger moisture barrier. Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) provides a gas and aroma barrier as well as a moisture barrier.
Popular products and uses: Heavy duty gusset bags and heavy duty heat seal bags for grains, nuts, and heftier products; stand up rice pouches and kraft stand up pouches with laminated inner lining used for cookies, candy, coffee, snacks, pet treats, and more.

Moderate Barrier
A moderate level barrier protects against gases, moisture, aromas and sometimes UV light. The types of materials used for this moderate level barrier include the following:
●PVC
●PET
Polyethylene terephthalate or PET is lightweight, food safe, and is commonly used for thermoformed packaging for plastic water bottles, meat and cheese packaging, and microwave packaging.
Polyvinyl chloride or PVC is a more rigid plastic material and can break down from UV rays. This material is chemical resistant yet not as clear. Our soft vinyl products are made of this same material.
PET offers high clarity and an excellent print surface, making it a popular material for displaying decorative food products.
Popular products and uses: Our clear boxes and soft vinyl products are made with either PVC or PET material. For food packaging, PET is the best option. PVC is a better choice for products like office supplies, electronics, and short-term food storage. Soft vinyl products include bookmark sleeves, magnet sleeves, and luggage tags.

High Performing Barrier
High performing barriers are comprised of multilayers and protect against odors, freshness, moisture, gases, UV light, and visible light. The combined materials of high barriers include:
●PET in conjunction with another plastic PE or PP (OP, MOPP or CPP)
●PVDC Lamination: Translucent, more affordable and usually laminated to PET to form KPET
●VMPET lamination: Near opaque and affordable; 4 mil and over is considered smell proof.
●AL lamination: The near-perfect barrier; opaque and smell proof
On its own, PET is a strong plastic that offers an excellent oxygen barrier, durability, and heat resistance. When laminated onto certain plastics like PP or CPP, this blend of materials provides a strong UV and moisture barrier.
Polyvinylidene chloride PVDC is often used as a coating with other plastics (like PET). High gloss in appearance, PVDC offers excellent oxygen and moisture barrier properties, and is comparable to metallized films.
The highest barrier packaging is often a metallized laminate where the middle layer is VMPET or a thin layer of aluminum (Al) is placed on the surface of a plastic film.
VMPET is PET that has been metallized with aluminum and provides a high barrier to light and oxygen.
A layer of aluminum provides the best insulation against light and oxygen and is a near-perfect barrier. Our plant-based PLA stand up pouches are laminated with an ALOX (aluminum oxide) coating, allowing even our eco sustainable pouches to have outstanding high barrier properties.
Popular products and uses: Metallized stand up barrier pouches and heat seal bags, clear PLA-ALOX pouches, coffee bags, and child resistant bags for aromatic and flavorful food and dry goods.

Factors to Consider When Choose High Barrier Bag

True Mylar-Foil vs. Metallized Polyester
Many consumers are informed enough to know that they require a “Mylar foil” material but they confuse this with metallized polyester, a completely different material with none of the same barrier properties as a true Mylar foil. Metallized polyester is the material used on Mylar balloons; it is far thinner and shinier than a true foil barrier film. This thin material keeps the balloons lightweight, but is unacceptable as a barrier film. We recommend true Mylar Foil, and a thicker film structure.

Material Selection
We offer many film structures to meet the requirements of our customers’ products. These requirements are based on how much oxygen, light and moisture their product can safely be exposed to. Our technical experts take these factors into consideration, as well as how the product will be stored, when they recommend a film structure. The goal is to select a material with enough of a barrier to properly protect the product, while not overspending on unnecessary films.
Industries that require such packaging range from food and pharmaceutical, to biomedical and electronics. Products include in-process ingredients, pharmaceutical products, dehydrated/freeze dried food products, and many other items which may be sensitive to moisture, or subject to oxidation. Our technical background and experience with a breadth of industries makes us uniquely capable of advising our customers on their packaging selection.

Product Compatibility
Material selection should be based on the product to be packaged. For example, aggressive chemicals and fine powders both have very specific requirements for the inner layer of the pouch. Chemicals, and even natural ingredients such as lemon, contain agents that can react with different films. In addition to establishing material/product compatibility, the ability to seal through the product must also be confirmed. Certain products leave a residue that presents challenges in heat sealing. Such products include fine powders and oily products. For such items we recommend a film with an advanced inner layer capable of sealing straight through substances/residues.

Seal Strength
It is imperative that the barrier pouch receive a solid seal. We recommend using one of our heat sealers which range from small tabletop units to large free standing units, and even specialty units capable of sealing uncoated Tyvek and other challenging materials. Custom or "contour" seal designs are also an option. Many industries have strict regulations regarding documented seal settings with consistent and measurable time, temperature, and pressure readings for each seal.
