What is Stand Up Zipper Bags?

A stand-up pouch, or doypack, is a type of flexible packaging that can stand upright on its bottom for storage, display, and convenience. It has characteristics of plastic bags, water bottles, and retort pouches. The bottom part of a stand-up pouch is gusseted to provide support for display or use. Stand-up pouches are commonly used for food packaging. They can be aseptically filled or filled on normal packaging lines. These pouches are usually constructed of multi-layer materials: various plastic films, paper, foil, etc. The materials must have specialized heat-seal properties to allow conversion into pouches. The most common pouch has bottom gussets to form a "W" which opens to allow a flat bottom.

Features of Stand Up Zipper Bags

Food Safe

Our stand-up bags are made of food-grade kraft paper, plastic, foil and aluminum materials. The inner lining is coated with safe wax and does not contain any BPA ingredients, providing your food with a longer-term freshness than ordinary paper bags.

Easy to Use

These stand-up bags are equipped with a sealed zipper that you can unzip repeatedly for easy storage and access to various items. A frosted viewing window in the middle of the exterior bag allows you to see the product stored in the bag without breaking the seal.

Highly Sealed

Their zippers are waterproof when closed, forming a highly sealed state to protect your food, snacks, dried fruits, etc. from insects, steam, moisture, odor, etc.

Humanized Design

The corners of these stand-up bags are designed with rounded corners to avoid scratching the skin during use. At the same time, they have a U-shaped notch on the top, making them easy to tear without consumptive strength or search for scissors.

Application of Stand Up Zipper Bags

There are many applications and uses for ziplock stand-up pouch packaging, ranging from everyday food items to industrial products. We created a rundown of the following industries that use stand-up pouch packaging:

Bakery Packaging Bag

Food Packaging

One of the most common uses is to store and protect food products such as snacks, cereals, pet foods, dried fruits, and vegetables. The airtight seal keeps these items fresh and prevents moisture or mold formation. Food such as nuts, candy, and granola often come in ziplock stand-up pouch packaging to preserve their crunchy texture. The ziplock stand-up pouch packaging also has great marketing capabilities, offering a modern look that helps to attract customers.

Cosmetics and Healthcare Products

The moisture-resistant properties of ziplock stand-up pouch packaging make it ideal for storing cosmetics and health care products. This type of packaging is also lightweight and convenient, making it easy to carry and store. It can also be used for small items such as vitamins, supplements, and medication, which need to remain sealed and secure.

Coffee Packaging

Coffee enthusiasts and coffee businesses are shifting their packaging from traditional tins and jars to stand-up pouches. The ziplock stand-up pouch packaging helps to preserve the freshness and aroma of the coffee beans for a longer period without any loss in quality. The zippered seal packaging also prevents moisture from entering the pouch, keeping the coffee beans fresher for longer. The resealable ziplock stand-up pouch packaging makes it easy to open and close the pouch, ensuring that the coffee beans remain fresh and aromatic. With ziplock stand-up pouch packaging, you can pack coffee beans, coffee grounds, instant coffee, and even coffee pods.

Pet Food Packaging

Pet owners and businesses alike know how important it is to keep their pet’s food fresh and safe. Ziplock stand-up pouch packaging is the ideal solution as it provides an airtight seal that protects against moisture, dust, and other contaminants.
The resealable feature makes it easy to close after each use and prevents the food from going stale. Pet food is commonly made of various ingredients for pets. Air and moisture can easily spoil and degrade the quality of the food. Ziplock stand-up pouch packaging ensures that pet food remains fresh and safe for your furry friends. Also, ziplock stand-up packaging for their convenience and affordability. These pouches come in various sizes, shapes, and colors to suit your specific needs.

The stand-up pouch can also be used to store tools, such as scissors, glue guns, stitching needles, and other craft materials as they will remain secure. The zip-lock feature also allows users to take out the items they need quickly and easily without having to rummage through the bag.

Coffee and Tea Packaging

The ziplock stand-up pouch packaging is great for tea since it keeps the tea fresh and preserves its scent. Ziplock stand-up pouches are another option for loose tea products since they keep out air, moisture, and other pollutants, extending the tea’s shelf life and preserving its taste. Ziplock stand-up pouch packaging keeps coffee fresh and fragrant for much longer, whether its ground or whole beans.

Benefits of Stand Up Zipper Bags

There is a reason why brands are ditching rigid packaging and turning to flexible stand up pouches to better promote, protect, and drive sales of their products—in fact, there are eight. From production to purchase, stand up pouches offer multiple benefits to both manufacturers and consumers. Here are the eight advantages of stand up pouches our customers enjoy the most:

Graphics
Flexographic printing for flexible packages is the most versatile of all package printing options, and can create stunning HD graphics for your stand up pouch. Flexographic printing offers the most precise ink control and solid lay-down on a wide range of films. In combination with this advanced printing technology, stand up pouches can offer your product the best, most eye-catching graphics on the shelf.

Shape & Structure
Stand up pouches can be produced in a variety of shapes and sizes. Consumers are most familiar with the standard pouch—a round-bottom-gusset bag that folds flat when empty. Other options include box pouches, K-sealed, quad-sealed (two side gussets and four vertical seals), and more. Stand up pouches can even be die cut into custom shapes to really stand out on the shelf.

Cost Reduction
Switching to stand up pouches (and flexible packaging in general) is a no-brainer if you’re looking to reduce the cost of materials. Rigid packaging costs three to six times more per unit than flexible packaging. Printed folding cartons cost around twice as much as flexible packaging. Simply put, choosing stand up pouches over a rigid alternative will mean much-improved profit margins for your business.

Transportation & Warehousing
Stand up pouches also offer significant cost savings in distribution. Depending on the pouch and the original packaging solution, you can fit five to ten times the number of units in a single truck using fewer pallets. Since the packaging is also lighter, the fuel cost per truck is lower. You can store more of your product in less space, and it takes less time and labor to move it around.

Convenience Features
Consumers value convenience, so you can add value to your brand with stand up pouch features. Resealable closures help extend the life of food and create a better customer experience with your product. You can choose from press-to-close, zip lock, or hook-to-hook closures to add convenience to your pouch. You can also choose laser perforation, transparent windows, handles, and spouts. Stand up pouches can also be made steamable, so consumers can enjoy the added convenience of preparing their food in the microwave without having to remove it from the bag.

Product Safety
Stand up pouches can keep food fresher for longer, and provide excellent barrier control to protect against the elements. Puncture-resistant films can be used to safeguard your products during transport, and a number of specialty films can provide extra protection against moisture, contaminants, UV rays, and more.

Shelf Impact
With a wide ranges of shapes and sizes available and stunning HD graphic capabilities, stand up pouches easily stand out on the shelf. The biggest benefit of stand up pouches in terms of shelf impact is simply the amount of real estate manufacturers now have to work with—the largest printable surface of the package stands up and faces the customer. This allows your product to compete in ways that products in lay-down bags and smaller rigid containers can’t.

Sustainability
Stand up pouches are better for the environment. Flexible packaging in general uses fewer materials and less energy and water to make, and fewer volatile organic compounds are produced as a result. In addition to cost savings, their lighter weight and more compact size save on fuel emissions during transportation. Any non-recyclable materials used take up less space in landfills than their rigid counterparts.

Components of Stand Up Zipper Bags
The Construction

A stand up pouch is made of multiple layers of barrier materials that have been laminated together to create one continuous sheet. The barrier materials and bag construction determine the durability and shelf life of your packaging. The chosen materials also determine the potential risk of bag punctures, leaks, and tears. Therefore, choosing a higher quality bag will ultimately mean fewer problems down the road. There are typically 2-3 layers in the construction of a stand up pouch. There is an outer layer, a middle layer, and an inner layer. Each layer provides a barrier of protection to protect and preserve the contents from environmental elements including moisture, UV light, oxygen, and external odors.

The Outer Layer

We offer several exterior options; natural kraft paper, black kraft paper, clear, and our matte frosted exterior. The outer layer of the pouch communicates your brand message and what draws a customer to your product. The natural kraft paper pouches have an earth-friendly, all natural, small-scale production look and feel. Nothing says NATURAL like kraft paper. Whereas, the black kraft paper stand up pouches have a powerfully alluring look that is combined with the natural feel and texture of kraft paper. But, keep in mind, kraft paper is not used solely for its good looks. Quality kraft paper is strong, extremely durable. It has a resistance to punctures and tears. The porous, natural texture of kraft paper makes it ideal for labeling and hand stamping. Our matte frosted stand up pouches have a very captivating and compelling look that will enhance any product. The greatest benefit of our matte frosted stand up pouches is that they are water-resistant. They too can be customized with labels, hand-stamped with permanent ink, and hot-stamped.

The Middle Layer

This middle layer can be made of different film materials, but most commonly used is either (AL) aluminum foil, (VMPET) a metalized film, (PET or PETE) polyethylene terephthalate.
(AL) Aluminum Foil – An aluminum foil layer barrier keeps your product fresh for approximately 20 months, compared to 13 months when metalized (VMPET) barrier film is used. Aluminum foil film has a much higher end appearance and offers better protection.
(VMPET) – A metalized film often used in lower quality packaging. Although it does offer barrier protection, this cheaper material does not offer the long-term protection that aluminum foil does. This metalized film has a metallically appearance and is not very appealing to the customers when the bags are opened.

(PET OR PETE) – A thermoplastic polymer resin of the polyester family that’s used in packaging for food and beverages, personal care products, and many other consumer products.

The Inner Layer

The inner layer a stand up pouch is extremely important, especially when using them for food packaging. The inner lining is the material that comes into direct contact with your product. The most common material used for stand up pouches is (LLDPE) linear low-density polyethylene. This material is used widely throughout the packaging industry because it is FDA approved and is safe for direct contact with food.
Heat sealing your bags gives your product a tamper-evident seal, thereby giving your customer the confidence and assurance that the product has not been opened or tampered with.

The Bottom

The expandable bottom gusset is what gives a stand up pouch the ability to stand freely on its own. Our stand up gusset bags have a very sturdy, w/u-shaped gusseted which allows the pouch to stand prominently without collapsing.

The Zipper

They prevent the stored items from coming in direct contact with air and help keep them clean, dry, and fresh for a long period. These bags offer convenience and reusability with their zipper closure mechanism, making them reusable, and allowing for convenient access to the contents.

Factors to Consider When Choose Stand Up Zipper Bags

Determine the Right Size for Your Stand Up Pouch
Let’s review the basics of pouch sizing. The dimensions of a stand up pouch are always listed in the following order: width, height and a gusset. If a pouch doesn’t have a gusset listed, it’s not a stand up pouch, as these pouches do not stand up on the shelf.
Next, pouch dimensions are always based on the outside of the bag. You must remember that there is a seam that holds the bag together so you can’t assume that your product will fit inside without testing it.
If you want to choose the right size stand up pouch, start by ordering samples so you can actually put your product in the pouch. If your pouch is too full it will burst at the seams and you’ll experience a bag blowout. If you have a lot of extra room you may be paying for more bag than you need, AND your customers may be disappointed when they see how little product is in the bag. That’s why we offer 100% custom sized pouches.
You’ll also need to be aware of how much extra space you need to leave in the bag for natural expansion or gases that may be released during transport or while sitting on a store shelf. For packages that release gas you might want to consider a de-gassing valve.
Before you order your product packaging in bulk, be sure to pack different product sizes in sample pouches until you are sure which ones fit best. You can order the sample sizes from mini, small, medium, large, to extra-large free, for this reason.

Choose the Right Material for Your Stand Up Pouch
Most stand up pouches are made from metalized mylar. However, depending on what you are packaging, you can try clear, silver, foil, or kraft materials. Some even recyclable, compostable, or even biodegradable stand up pouches. So how do you choose the right material?
●Consider how long your product is going to be in the package
●Consider the required shelf life
●Think about how important freshness is to your product and brand image.
For example, think about corn chips versus dried apples. Corn chips are usually packaged in economical medium to low barrier materials because most of us eat our chips quickly after purchasing them. Nobody expects chips to have an extensive shelf life and chips are a low margin item that requires a reasonably priced packaging solution.

Selecting Your Stand Up Pouch Features
Choosing the features on your bag is the fun part. You get to imagine how your customer will use your bag.
The Versatile Hang Hole
Think about the way candy or nuts are organized near the checkout in your favorite grocery store. They likely use a hang hole as well to make it easy to grab n’ go. Hang holes are the hardest working feature on a pouch so even if you expect your pouch to stand up on the shelf think about any possible retailer environments where your pouch may end up hanging.
●The Resealable Zipper
Did you know there are more than six different types of of zippers that can be used on your pouch. It all depends on what you are putting in your pouch. For example, if you are packaging matcha green tea, you need a powder zipper because otherwise your bag will have trouble resealing and customers may spill an expensive product and never buy your product again due to the packaging “error.”
●The Child Resistant Pouch
If you are packaging cannabis you may be required to use a child resistant zipper (it varies by state). But any product that is potentially dangerous to children really should be child resistant. This could be supplement pouches, or fertilizer bags, or detergent pods for example.
